How does the Lightning Network work?

Two parties open a payment channel by locking Bitcoin in a multi-signature address on the blockchain. Once open, they can exchange unlimited transactions instantly with negligible bitcoin fees. When finished, the channel closes and the final balance is recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain. Bitcoin Lightning also routes payments through multiple channels, so you do not need a direct channel with every person you pay — enabling bitcoin scalability across the entire network.
